Viola banksii — Australian Native Violet
Viola banksii is a charming, low-growing ground-cover plant known for its delicate green foliage and dainty violet flowers with contrasting white and purple markings. Native to eastern Australia, this spreading plant forms a soft carpet of greenery, bringing a natural woodland feel to miniature landscapes. Its compact growth and attractive flowers make it a beautiful addition to suitable planted displays and cool, humid terrarium environments.
Terrarium Care Requirements
- Light: Bright, indirect light. Adequate light encourages healthy foliage and flowering.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity, with good air circulation.
- Watering: Keep the substrate evenly moist but not waterlogged.
- Temperature: Prefers mild conditions, approximately 15–24°C; prolonged high temperatures may cause stress.
- Substrate: Use a fertile, moisture-retentive substrate with good drainage and organic matter.
- Maintenance: Trim spreading runners when necessary and remove faded flowers or damaged leaves.
Interesting Fact: Australian Native Violet spreads through creeping stems that can root as they grow, allowing it to form a dense, natural ground cover.
Designer’s Tip: Use it along the foreground or edges of a planted landscape to create a soft green carpet. However, because it generally prefers cooler conditions than many tropical terrarium plants, it may not thrive long-term in a warm, sealed terrarium.
