Phyllanthus prostratus (commonly known as Prostrate Phyllanthus)
Phyllanthus prostratus is a delicate, low-growing tropical plant admired for its tiny, rounded leaves arranged along slender, creeping stems. Its compact growth habit and fine foliage create a soft, moss-like appearance, making it an attractive choice for miniature landscapes and tropical terrariums. As it spreads across the substrate and around hardscape elements, it adds natural detail and enhances the lush, layered character of a miniature rainforest.
Terrarium Care Requirements
- Light: Low to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can stress the delicate foliage.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity, making it suitable for humid tropical terrariums.
- Watering: Keep the substrate lightly and consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions, ideally around 20–28°C.
- Substrate: Use a fine-textured, moisture-retentive substrate that is rich in organic matter and well aerated.
- Maintenance: Trim creeping stems when necessary to control its spread and maintain a neat, compact appearance. Remove any yellowing foliage promptly.
Interesting Fact: Its miniature leaves and creeping growth make it an excellent plant for creating the impression of a lush forest floor in a small glass landscape.
Designer’s Tip: Plant it along the edges of rocks, around driftwood, or in open foreground spaces where its delicate foliage can spread naturally and soften the hardscape.
