Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum spp.)
Delicate, fan-shaped leaflets arranged along slender, dark stems give the Maidenhair Fern its graceful, almost ethereal appearance. Native to many tropical and temperate regions around the world, this fern thrives in humid environments with indirect light and consistently moist soil. Its soft, feathery foliage brings elegance and tranquillity to terrariums, evoking the lush beauty of a miniature forest.
Terrarium Care Requirements
- Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can overheat the terrarium and scorch its delicate foliage.
- Humidity: High humidity, ideally 70–90%, makes this fern well suited to closed terrariums.
- Watering: Keep the substrate consistently moist but never waterlogged. Use filtered or low-mineral water where possible.
- Temperature: Prefers moderate temperatures of approximately 18–26°C.
- Substrate: A moisture-retentive yet well-draining substrate rich in organic matter, supported by a suitable drainage layer.
- Maintenance: Remove dry or damaged fronds regularly and prune gently to maintain a lush, compact appearance. Ensure adequate air circulation to prevent mould.
Interesting Fact: Maidenhair Fern leaves are naturally water-repellent, allowing droplets to bead up and roll off their delicate surfaces.
Designer’s Tip: Position this fern in a shaded corner of your terrarium, where its fine-textured foliage can soften hardscape edges and create a natural, woodland-like atmosphere.
