Selaginella uncinata — Peacock Spikemoss
Selaginella uncinata, commonly known as Peacock Spikemoss, is a beautiful creeping plant admired for its delicate, overlapping foliage and iridescent blue-green to teal hues, which can display subtle metallic reflections under the right lighting. Its intricate, fern-like leaves and spreading growth habit create a soft, carpet-like effect, making it an excellent choice for tropical terrariums and miniature forest landscapes. Its distinctive foliage adds depth, texture, and a touch of colour to naturalistic planted displays.
Terrarium Care Requirements
- Light: Low to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate foliage.
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity, ideally around 70–90%.
- Watering: Keep the substrate consistently moist but not waterlogged. Do not allow it to dry out completely.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions, ideally around 18–26°C.
- Substrate: Use a moisture-retentive, organic-rich substrate with good aeration and drainage.
- Maintenance: Trim creeping stems to control spread and maintain a compact carpet. Remove damaged foliage and provide gentle air circulation to help prevent mould.
Interesting Fact: Its foliage can produce a striking blue-green, almost metallic sheen when viewed from different angles, giving it the appearance of a miniature peacock’s plumage.
Designer’s Tip: Plant it around rocks, driftwood, or along the foreground of a terrarium. Its distinctive colour creates a beautiful contrast with green mosses, ferns, and other tropical plants, adding an enchanting rainforest atmosphere to your miniature landscape.
