Selaginella Red — Red Spikemoss
Selaginella Red is an eye-catching, low-growing tropical foliage plant admired for its intricate, fern-like leaves in rich shades of copper, bronze, reddish-orange, and red. Its delicate, overlapping foliage and creeping growth habit create a beautiful carpet of colour, bringing warmth and contrast to miniature landscapes. Ideal for rainforest-inspired terrariums and planted displays, this striking plant adds depth, texture, and a distinctive splash of colour among green mosses and tropical foliage.
Terrarium Care Requirements
- Light: Low to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate foliage.
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity, ideally around 70–90%.
- Watering: Keep the substrate consistently moist but not waterlogged. Avoid allowing it to dry out completely.
- Temperature: Prefers warm, stable conditions, approximately 18–26°C.
- Substrate: Use a moisture-retentive, organic-rich substrate with good aeration and drainage.
- Maintenance: Trim spreading stems as needed and remove damaged foliage. Provide gentle air circulation to reduce the risk of mould.
Interesting Fact: The vibrant red and copper tones of some Selaginella varieties create a striking contrast against green plants, making them particularly valuable for adding colour to miniature tropical landscapes.
Designer’s Tip: Use Selaginella Red as a foreground accent around pale stones, driftwood, or lush green mosses. Its warm foliage creates a beautiful contrast and can evoke the rich colours of a tropical forest floor.
