Selaginella Green — Green Spikemoss
Selaginella Green is a delicate, low-growing foliage plant admired for its lush green colour, intricate scale-like leaves, and soft, spreading growth habit. Resembling a miniature forest of tiny ferns, its dense foliage creates a beautiful carpet of greenery that brings freshness and natural texture to tropical terrariums. Perfect for rainforest-inspired landscapes, this versatile plant adds depth and helps create a rich, layered appearance among rocks, driftwood, mosses, and other tropical plants.
Terrarium Care Requirements
- Light: Low to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight.
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity, ideally around 70–90%.
- Watering: Keep the substrate consistently moist but not waterlogged. Avoid allowing it to dry out completely.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm, stable conditions, approximately 18–26°C.
- Substrate: Use a moisture-retentive, organic-rich substrate with good aeration and drainage.
- Maintenance: Trim spreading stems as needed to maintain the desired shape. Remove damaged foliage and provide gentle air circulation to discourage mould.
Interesting Fact: Despite its fern-like appearance, Selaginella belongs to an ancient group of spore-producing plants known as spikemosses. It is neither a true fern nor a moss.
Designer’s Tip: Use Selaginella Green around rocks, driftwood, and the base of larger plants to create a lush forest-floor effect. Its fine foliage is ideal for softening hardscape edges and bringing a sense of scale to miniature rainforest landscapes.
