Selaginella Picta
Often admired for its intricate foliage and striking patterns, Selaginella picta is a delicate, fern-like plant that brings texture and visual depth to miniature landscapes. Its small, overlapping leaves display beautiful shades of green, often accented by silvery or pale markings that create a distinctive, shimmering appearance. Native to tropical Southeast Asia, this moisture-loving plant thrives in warm, humid environments, making it an excellent choice for tropical terrariums and miniature rainforest-inspired designs.
Terrarium Care Requirements
- Light: Low to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight to protect its delicate foliage.
- Humidity: High humidity, ideally 70–90%, for lush and healthy growth.
- Watering: Keep the substrate evenly moist but not waterlogged. Avoid allowing the plant to dry out completely.
- Temperature: Prefers warm conditions between 18–28°C.
- Substrate: Moisture-retentive, airy substrate rich in organic matter, with good drainage.
- Maintenance: Trim spreading growth as needed and remove any yellowing or damaged foliage. Ensure the plant does not sit in stagnant water.
Interesting Fact: Selaginella belongs to an ancient group of plants known as spikemosses. Despite its fern-like appearance, it is neither a true fern nor a moss; it reproduces through spores.
Designer’s Tip: Use Selaginella picta as a low-growing accent around rocks, driftwood, or the base of larger plants. Its patterned foliage adds a beautiful, miniature rainforest effect to a closed tropical terrarium.
Note: Plant will be shipped bare-root.
